Why can’t I play MKV files on my TV?

Can’t play MKV files on your TV? This post walks you through how to make MKV movies playable on TV.

Why won’t my TV play certain MKV files?
“Hey all, I have a number of MKV movies. The trouble is, my TV plays some of them and refuses to play the rest, displaying an unhelpful codec error message. How should I go about this issue? Can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks.”

MKV is an open standard free container format that can store various video, audio, picture or subtitle tracks inside a single file. Your TV manual should list the supported codecs, containers and size/bitrate restrictions. If your MKV file contains a codec that your TV doesn’t support, it will not play. In that case, we would recommend converting MKV files to the widely-accepted H.264 MP4 first. Here’s how.
