To be able to import MXF media from Canon XF (XF100/105/300/305) and Cinema EOS cameras (Canon C300/C500) directly into Final Cut Pro X, you will need to download and install Canon XF Plugin which is available for free download on the Canon website on your Mac OS X computer.

On March 5, 2014, Canon released XF Plugin for Final Cut Pro X version 2.1.1.You can download it from the Drivers & Software area for the EOS C300. The same XF plug-in download is also available on the Drivers & Software areas for the XF100, XF105, XF300, XF305 and C500.

If for some reason the XF Plugin for Final Cut Pro X not working, you may need to use a conversion application to transcode Canon MXF footage to Apple ProRes 422, a format that is well compatible with FCP X.

How to transcode Canon MXF footage to Apple ProRes 422 for FCP X?

To transcode Canon MXF footage to ProRes for FCP, follow these steps:

Step 1: Run Canon XF media converter for FCP and load Canon MXF media to it

Step 2: Select ‘Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov)’ as output format for FCP X

Important: If you’ve loaded a number of video clips to do batch conversion, please do remember ticking off ‘Apply to All’ option before you start.

Step 3: Adjust video and audio settings (for advanced users)

Step 4: Click ‘Convert’ to transcode Canon XF files to Apple ProRes 422.

Step 5: Click ‘Open Folder’ to get generated ProRes QuickTime files for using in Final Cut Pro X with optimum performance.
