Need a Sony XAVC (S) converter to make Sony XAVC / XAVC S workflow with DaVinci Resolve much more smoothly? If so, you may have interest in this post. It elaborates the detailed steps required to convert Sony XAVC / XAVC S footage to ProRes .mov or DNxHD .mov for use in DaVinci Resolve by using third party converter program.
Sony has released a few plug-ins to help consumers import different camera footage for use in various editing programs. For example, the XAVC/XDCAM Plug-in for Apple (PDZK-LT2) provides support for XAVC and XDCAM / XDCAM EX files shot on Sony SxS card, allowing viewing and editing capability in Final Cut Pro X, and the XAVC/XDCAM Plug-in for Avid (PDZK-MA2) plug-in supports for XAVC and XDCAM / XDCAM EX files in Avid Media Composer, Symphony and NewsCutter products. However, due to different reasons, sometimes the plug-ins may not work correctly, if that’s the case, you will need to convert Sony XAVC / XAVC S to a format that is well compatible with your editing program in advance. In our older posts, we have talked about how to convert XVAC (S) for FCP, how to transcode XAVC (S) for Avid and how to encode XAVC (S) for iMovie/FCE. Here in this post, we would like to elaborate the detailed steps required to rewrap XAVC (S) to MOV for editing in DaVinci Resolve with ProRes or DNxHD codec. This requires third party software like HD Video Converter.
You can download a demo version (for both, PC and Mac) to have a try.
XAVC(S) and DaVinci Resolve – How to convert Sony XAVC / XAVC S footage to MOV for DaVinci Resolve with ProRes or DNxHD codec?
Follow these steps:
Step 1: Run HD Video Converter as a professional XAVC (S) to MOV Converter. From the main menu, click ‘Add File’ button to add source files that you want to convert.
Step 2: Choose output format for DaVinci Resolve
If you are running a Mac computer, you can click “Format” bar to choose ‘Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov)’ as output format under ‘Final Cut Pro’ column. The ProRes 422 is a good editing codec for DaVinci Resolve, and the file size is reasonable.
If you are using a Windows PC, you can navigate to ‘Format’ bar and select ‘Avid Media Composer’ > ‘Avid DNxHD (*.mov)’ as output format for DaVinci Resolve. This format is also optimal for use in Avid systems.
Step 3: Click “Settings” button to custom video and audio parameters on ‘Profile Settings’ panel. (Optional)
Step 4: Click ‘Convert’ button to start converting XAVC (S) video to Apple ProRes 422 .mov or DNxHD .mov.
Step 5: After conversion finished, click “Open Folder” button to get the exported QuickTime files for using in DaVinci Resolve with optimum performance.
